I’m sure y’all are looking at this title thinking it’s gonna be a reference about the singer prince buuut it’s not. So recently I’ve been talking about the yoni, vagina, pocketbook, whatever it is your call your womb. But, realizing a lot of women aren’t fully educated on their vagina, what it does, what it needs, the things it does when it’s trying to communicate with you about issues you may have or attention she needs. Now I’m sure you’re probably like how in the world can my vagina communicate with me? Just like our bodies it may not actually be able to talk but, it has its ways of telling us what it doesn’t like, what you need to stop doing, what you need more of, and things of that nature.
Now the first thing I wanna dive into is these commercial vaginal or “feminine” washes. All these washes state that they are formulated to help keep the vagina balanced, help remove odor and all that good stuff. But at the same time most don’t really look at the fact a lot of those washes have fragrance and fragrance isn’t something that the vagina needs in order to remain balanced. If anything, it only causes issues such as ph imbalance, UTI’s, BV (bacterial vaginosis), yeast infections and other issues. The rule of thumb I generally go by is if the ingredient list is way too long or you can’t pronounce any of the words you don’t need to be using it on your vagina. Most will try and argue and say oh well they have to use the scientific name for it. Even then that still doesn’t justify why they are using harmful chemicals in a feminine wash. Then not to mention, all those imbalances aren’t the only complications a woman can obtain from the use. Using these can cause pelvic cancer, ovarian cancer, ovarian cyst, PSOC, endometriosis, for some it can cause hemorrhaging or as most know heavy bleeding during your period.
The sad part about this is, most of these companies won’t tell you or give you a disclaimer or state what can happen. Kind of like medications or drugs doctors prescribe how they have to trial runs and have people test them to be able to say what side effects could come about. Such as nausea, death, heart attack, blood clots all that. But for women they don’t think it’s necessary to disclose this info. Granted these feminine washes and hell even pads and tampons aren’t the only cause of this. But they don’t even go into all the other shit that causes this because, at the end of the day it’s about the money. They make these commercials with these women smiling and all this good stuff and highlight the benefits but nobody wants to talk about the damaging effects it can have. Let’s not forget to mention how many women suffer from not being able to have children.
Now, circling back to not having children or not being able to. Birth control. The first thing as a teenager your parents want to do is put you on birth control. When you have your baby as SOON as you get done, they sneak it in and ask if you plan on using birth control or they’ll act like they care and ask how many children do you plan on having. Let’s not add how much birth control is pushed like it’s going out of style on Black women.
I’ve been on every single birth control known to man except the 10-year, patch, and the uva ring. I couldn’t really take pills due to past experiences; I had the Implanon or Nexplanon whichever it’s called I dealt with severely dry skin, horrible acne, I had acne covering my entire back every time I turned around, I had another pimple. Then I was gaining weight, I felt like I was becoming depressed, the list goes on. Then after I finally got that birth control removed, I decided the I.U.D was an AMAZING idea (peep the sarcasm). As well as the infamous Depo shot *major eye roll*.
So, I got this the day I went to the doctor’s office I asked the usual what to expect and how long does it stay in. She explained little to no side effects and it would be in for 3 years. Times goes by I notice I develop an odor in my vagina. At first I’m thinking it could be due to diet or water consumption. Nope that wasn’t it. Made sure I was using the right feminine wash and fully drying myself down there. That wasn’t helping either. Over time the odor just became stronger and stronger to the point it was lingering on my clothes even after taking them off and washing them. Down the line I tell myself I can’t do this, so I make an appt to see the dr again to have it removed. I explain to her the other symptoms I’m experiencing but my main concern being the foul odor I had. Mind you, as I’m lying in the table you can smell the odor and the doctor just proceeds to say “it’s not that big of a deal and it’ll go away”. Mind you I’ve had this odor for over 3 months now and I’ve did everything I can to get rid of it and to no avail never did. So, I tell her in the sternest voice possible I do not want this IUD any longer. I don’t give a damn about if I get pregnant just take it out. She turns and rolls her eyes as she takes out new tools to remove it. As she opens me up to take the IUD out all I can think of is the relief I’m going to get. Once it’s removed, I feel such a weight lifted from my shoulders and she quickly throws it in the garbage folded in the paper towel and leaves the room for me to redress. Me being curious I take the neatly folded paper towel out of the trash can and something told me to smell the IUD. Just as I suspected the IUD had old period blood, and built up debris on it. Which is what was causing me to have such a foul odor that resembled dead fish and a rotting corpse. Then to fucking think this doctor thought I wanted this to stay inside me???? That alone just goes to show these doctors not only don’t care about women’s health at all, they really don’t give a single fuck about black women or their health. Just off the strength they are doing whatever they need to keep us from procreating because, they know the power we hold so whatever they can do to stop it they will.
With birth control one thing I learned is, if you absolutely can avoid it please do. These doctors will try to persuade you in any way they can to get on it and as I stated before list all the benefits not being pregnant being one of them, but also to promote weight loss, help clear up your skin, along with not having a period. You see all that sounds good but your body is legit falling apart from the inside out. How would you feel if you needed your hand to write and someone told you oh you don’t need that then just proceeded to chop it off and you’re just standing there doing everything that it is you can to help and fight it but there’s nothing that you can do about it. That’s how your body feels when you take birth control. You’re literally blocking out the hormones that were put into your body to help it function on a day to day basis.
Most don’t know there are plenty of alternatives to birth control or dealing with the issues that it is you have. I get it at a certain point in your life everyone doesn’t want to wait for the time it takes the body to heal so birth control can be used as a quick fix or a band aid as I like to call it. Some of the alternatives to not having to use birth control are diet change, removing dairy, processed food and sugar, as well as meat. All of these things have an extremely high acid content which isn’t good for the body or the vagina itself. Especially considering the vagina has a pH of 3.8-4.5 to help the body ward off any bacteria or possible infections. Second is black seed oil, now I’ve read this from multiple women about the benefits and how it’s a natural contraceptive. The thing with it is you have to make sure you apply it to the vagina before and after as well. It also helps to start menstruation as well!
Another form of course is abstinence but I don’t think I need to go to deep into that since it may be self-explanatory. If not, pretty much abstaining from having sex, well, vaginal sex at least lol. The second is learning your body. Now I know that may seem hard but, when is the last time you truly studied your body like a work of art? Or just took the time out to really pay attention to it? Paying attention to your body temperature, the consistency of your discharge, or if you’re like me you can feel when your body is releasing an egg. You can also find various apps to track your period as well. That was how I got started off in really starting to pay attention to my body and I just went from there. Granted there are women that have health issues and some don’t even have a period or they have irregular periods. Then that just means your diet may need to be assessed to see ways you can help to regulate it without the use of foreign chemicals.
The last thing I wanna talk about is vaginal maintenance, or external and some internal vaginal care. Along with the do’s and the don’ts. For me personally some of the things I do to keep me in order, not always but like I said try. Yoni steaming once a week, especially after a period. Steaming helps to remove any items that may be lodged in the vagina. It also helps with PCOS, fibroids, cysts, all different types of ailments. But I particularly like to use them after my period it’s kinda like my reset button. If I don’t have a steam available I’ll use a tightening wand. Now with this it serves more than one purpose, it helps to balance your pH because as we all may know periods have that affect, it helps to increase your overall vaginal tightness, and it’s helps to remove any odor you may have, and it has a very detoxing effect to it as well. Another thing that I’ve learned is a core necessity making sure you always drink water. I’ve learned so much over the years how much not only your body needs it but your vagina. If you’re not drinking water your body tends to produce more discharge to account for what’s not being put in. Now all discharge isn’t bad discharge but too much can be an issue down the line. So drinking water ensures your body is able to properly flush itself and keeps any bacteria that shouldn’t be there away. Although it has been said and proven the vagina is a self cleaning organ. Which is why it has the pH that it does or you may notice when you wear dark underwear that it looks bleached.
I also love to use yoni eggs as well. They help with sooooo many different things I use mines for more energy-based purposes or if I’ve had sex and feel I need energy removed. It also helps to strengthen your pelvic floor muscles, which is amazing for women who have had kids. The yoni eggs come in all different types of healing crystals and sizes. I always say when dealing with your womb it’s best to start off with Rose Quartz because of it being the crystal of love and self-love towards your yoni, which is extremely important, clear quartz because you can program it and speak into it whatever you’d like. Also, if available since it can be hard to find, obsidian or black tourmaline. These both work amazing for warding off negative energy and also helping to remove it as well.
Speaking of removing, I can’t say I have to use them often but yoni or diva pearls. These are more so to be used for more serious cases or if your vagina needs a factory rest for lack of a better word. Diva pearls are formulated with vaginal safe herbs that help to remove any debris or blockages in the vagina. Some women have reported old blood clots from periods coming out, dead skin that wasn’t shedded from the uterine lining prior to a period. If you have PCOS, fibroids, or cysts many have reported seeing big clumps come out after using more than one cleanse.
Lastly, to some this may be a double-edged sword but douching. Now as we know we’ve been told by our doctors, and health sources how unsafe douching is because it can throw off your pH and it takes away the good bacteria that you need. But when you’re using douches from the store that simply focus on removing odor and not helping your vaginal health yes, douching isn’t recommended at all. But, I’ve used douches for the first time that were actually formulated for my vagina and are made with natural herbs and spring water not chemically based and not only did it help but it made me feel fresher and also helped removed any buildup I might’ve had after period and also before a period. When these products are made, they just combat the one thing women don’t wanna deal with, odor. But it doesn’t address all issues, it more so covers up the odor instead of helping to balance your pH. That’s like KNOWING you need to take a shower but instead spraying perfume on to cover up the smell instead of actually addressing the issue. It may help temporarily but, it does not take away the fact you have an odor and what could be causing it. That’s why all the things I listed are simply that maintenance. It’s always best to consult with your doctor then from there do your own research and see ways you can improve your yoni. I truly truly truly hope this helps so many women out there and even men to have a better understanding of how our vagina works because, baby health class can’t and won’t teach you all this. VERY INFORMATIVE READ. The whole birth control thing is a frustrating. I’ve used that depo for 9 mos and after that I bled from the end of May to mid Aug. I was anemic all summer (where I was a camp counselor) in to the fall, I bled extremely heavy the entire time until the last week. So I ended that and got back on the pill. Had been on the pull since the end of my senior yr in HS. It was times I was off and on but it wasn’t for long periods of time. I got off it last May but I’m getting ready to get back on it. My gyno said she can give me the non hormonal one so we’ll see what happens but If it does anything crazy I’m getting back off it for good. We’ll be alright I’ve kinda figured out when I’m releasing an egg. And I think he knows too lol. But diet changes are happening. I’m switching to non dairy, and getting rid of pork by the end of the year. I love my bacon girl but I gotta leave the pork alone. Beef is next. I will be trying the yoni steams, and wand. I have yoni soaps so yay!
